4th Grade Japanese Landscape Scrolls

     4th graders took a look at Japanese landscape scrolls and Japanese architecture. Students created their own landscape scrolls using pencil, skinny Sharpie marker, and colored pencils. Students focused on creating a landscape that showed the foreground, the middle ground, and the background. Students were asked to place at least 3 structures into their drawing... one in each space (f.g., m.g., b.g.). Students focused on the following learning targets for this lesson:
-I can create a landscape drawing that shows the foreground, middle ground, and background spaces.
-I can drawing at least 3 different structures, a large one in the foreground, a medium sized one in the middle ground, and a small one in the background.
-I can use at least 5 different values of green in my drawing.
-I can show light shading, cross-hatching, and blending in my drawing.

5th Grade Pop Art Drawings

5th Grade Pop Art Drawings

     5th graders took a look at the work of Pop Artist, Roy Lichtenstein. Each student chose an onomatopoeia to use as the focus of their Pop Art drawing. Students were then given the task of using lines and shapes in their artwork that would fit with the onomatopoeia that they chose. Students used the primary colors, like Lichtenstein, to add color to their work, followed by solid black outlines. For this drawing, students worked on the following learning targets:
-I can use lines and shapes in my artwork that match my onomatopoeia. 

-I can explain the style of Lichtenstein's artwork.

-I can explain what Pop Art is about.

-I can show careful use of craftsmanship in my drawing and coloring.  

1st Grade Jim Dine Hearts

1st Grade Jim Dine Hearts

     First graders took a look at the American Pop Artist, Jim Dine, and his heart paintings and drawings. First graders created 2 different heart-works. First, students experimented with both compressed and willow charcoal and charcoal pencils and the different kinds of mark making to create a heart and the surrounding background. Watercolor paints were used to add color to the hearts. The second heart-work was created by overlapping and blending tempera paint inside the hearts, and overlapping and blending chalk pastels in the surrounding backgrounds. For this lesson students worked on the following learning targets:

-I can create an artwork using a variety of different lines and types of mark-making.

-I can overlap and blend colors. 

4th Grade Kimmy Cantrell Fish

4th Grade Kimmy Cantrell Fish

     4th graders created clay fish sculptures that were inspired by the work of sculpture artist, Kimmy Cantrell. For this lesson students first rolled out slabs of clay, then used additive sculpture methods to add on eyes, fish, and designs. Wooden tools and clay stamps were used to add patterns and textures to the fish. Students focused on the following learning targets for this lesson:

-I can create a clay sculpture that shows additive sculpture methods.

-I can create actual texture on my clay sculpture.

-I can attach my clay sculpture together properly by slipping and scoring.

3rd Grade Keith Haring Drawings

3rd Grade Keith Haring Drawings

     3rd graders learned about the American Pop artist Keith Haring. Students looked at a variety of Haring's artwork, and created their own marker drawings inspired by his figures, symbols, colors, and use of outlines. For this lesson students worked on the following learning targets:

-I can create a drawing using the same types of lines, shapes, and symbols that Keith Haring used.

-I can create a balanced drawing.

-I can show careful use of craftsmanship with my coloring and outlining.

3rd Grade Positive / Negative Shape Collages

     In in lesson, 3rd graders worked on cutting out shapes to create negative shapes or space, and in turn, adding the removed shape to create a positive shape or space. A negative shape is created when something is removed, and a positive shape is created when something is added. Students worked on the following learning targets for this lesson:

-I can create positive and negative shapes.

-I can explain the difference between positive and negative shapes.

-I can show careful use of craftsmanship in my cutting and gluing throughout my collage.

2nd Grade Chinese New Year Dragons

2nd Grade Chinese New Year Dragons

In this lesson, students learned about Chinese New Year, the celebrations and traditions. In China, the dragon and the color red symbolize good luck. Students designed their own good luck dragons. Students focused on the following learning targets:

-I can combine a variety of shapes and lines to create a drawing of a dragon.

- I can repeat lines, shapes, and colors to create patterns throughout my artwork. 

- I can show careful use of craftsmanship in my drawing, coloring, and painting. 

5th Grade Jim Dine Hearts

5th Grade Jim Dine Hearts

       5th graders learned about American painter, Jim Dine. Students looked at a variety of Jim Dine's paintings of hearts, taking a close look at style, technique, and color blending and overlapping. Students chose their painting surface from cardboard, tag board, illustration board, or hard canvases. Students also used a wide variety of paintbrush sizes as well as alternative painting tools, such as silverware, wooden tools, toothbrushes, and sponges. For this lesson, students worked on the following learning targets:

- I can overlap and blend a variety of colors, without creating any brown. 

- I can use a variety of paintbrush sizes and alternative tools to paint with. 

- I can create a painting that shows a clear difference between my two spaces... the heart, and the background.
