3rd Grade Keith Haring Drawings

     3rd graders learned about the American Pop artist Keith Haring. Students looked at a variety of Haring's artwork, and created their own marker drawings inspired by his figures, symbols, colors, and use of outlines. For this lesson students worked on the following learning targets:

-I can create a drawing using the same types of lines, shapes, and symbols that Keith Haring used.

-I can create a balanced drawing.

-I can show careful use of craftsmanship with my coloring and outlining. 

3rd Grade Positive / Negative Shape Collages

3rd Grade Positive / Negative Shape Collages

     In in lesson, 3rd graders worked on cutting out shapes to create negative shapes or space, and in turn, adding the removed shape to create a positive shape or space. A negative shape is created when something is removed, and a positive shape is created when something is added. Students worked on the following learning targets for this lesson:

-I can create positive and negative shapes.

-I can explain the difference between positive and negative shapes.

-I can show careful use of craftsmanship in my cutting and gluing throughout my collage.

3rd Grade Neutral Robots

3rd Grade Neutral Robots

     3rd graders invented their own robots. Students started by drawing robots using pencil first, then outlining with Sharpie markers. Students used white and black acrylic paint to mix a variety of neutral grays for painting in the robots. The focus of this project was to show as many values as possible within the robots. For this lesson, students worked on the following learning targets:

- I can combine a variety of shapes and lines to create an interesting and detailed robot.

- I can create and show at least 5 different neutral values in my artwork.

- I can show careful use of craftsmanship with my drawing and painting. 

3rd Grade Non-Objective Paintings

3rd Grade Non-Objective Paintings:

     3rd Graders took a close look at some famous non-objective, abstract artists. Students used old paint sticks and acrylic paint to create a non-objective painting, based upon color and mark making. Charcoal was used to add details and extra markings to the work.

3rd Grade Symmetrical Color Wheels

3rd graders created symmetrical color wheels. Students created symmetrical designs in pairs on complementary colors (opposites on the color wheel). Students then worked on using the primary colors, to mix the secondary colors. In each color section, students practiced mixing tints (by adding white to lighten the color), and shades (by adding black to darken a color). Learning Targets: 1. I can create symmetrical designs (in sets of complementary colors). 2. I can mix the primary colors to create secondary colors. 3. I can create a variety of tints & shades of colors.

3rd Grade Cardboard Montage

3rd Grade Cardboard Montage
     Each 3rd grade class created a collaborative art piece, to hang throughout our school.  For this project, each student used paint to design and decorate a piece of cardboard.  Once all of the pieces were designed and decorated, students worked together at their tables to assemble their pieces in a creative way.  Each table assemblage was then glued together to create a larger work.  As a class, students discussed:
- What does the world collaborate mean?
- How do artists collaborate with each other?
- What are some things to keep in mind when working on a project with others / as a group?

3rd Grade Tint & Shade Birds

In this lesson, 3rd graders practiced mixing a variety of tints and shades.  Students started by drawing birds with pencil, showing space and depth by overlapping at least 2 of their birds.  Acrylic paint was then used to paint in the birds.  Students added white to their colors to mix a variety of tints, and added black to their colors to mix a variety of shades.  Texture rubs were then added to the background with crayon.

3rd Grade Symmetrical Line Drawings

     In this lesson, 3rd graders worked on creating line drawings and designs that were symmetrical.  With a ruler, students drew a line of symmetry down their paper.  Using a skinny Sharpie marker, symmetrical lines, shapes, and designs were then created on both sides of the line of symmetry.  Once the symmetrical designs were finished, tempera cake paints were used to add color to the background of the drawing.  Students chose whether they wanted to use warm colors, or cool colors in their background, and worked on blending between colors.
