2nd Grade Picasso Faces

     2nd graders studied the work of Pablo Picasso. Students mainly focused on his portrait paintings. Students created their own self-portrait collages using Picasso's style of showing the profile and the front view of the face at the same time. Students cut a variety of cubist shapes from colored construction paper, and rearranged them onto the face of their self-portrait. Students chose to use oil pastels to add details to their collage when they were finished. For this lesson, students worked on the following learning targets:

- I can combine and overlap a variety of cut shapes to create an interesting composition. 

- I can create a self-portrait that shows both the profile and front view of my face.

- I can show careful use of craftsmanship with my cutting and gluing.

5th Grade Architectural Collages

5th Grade Architectural Collages

     5th graders took a close look at the work of architects Frank Lloyd Wright and Frank Gehry.  Students learned how to identify structures based on the different styles of both architects. Students also studied some architectural vocabulary and worked on identifying the vocabulary words in a variety of structures. Students were given photocopies of famous structures, structures from architecture magazines and and structures by both FLW and Gehry. Students cut out a variety of parts from different architectural structures and assembled them as a collage, to create their own unique structure. When finished, students had to identify and list all of the vocabulary words that they incorporated into their structures. Using colored pencil to add color and details to the collage was optional. For this project, students worked on the following learning targets:

- I can identify and explain the difference between the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and Frank Gehry.

- I can identify and use a variety of architectural vocabulary in my collage.

-  I can show careful use of craftsmanship and assemblage in my work.
